Rock
and Ice Climbing
The two traditional and most developed climbing
areas in Bulgaria are located in Rila (granite) and the Balkan
Range just outside the city of Vratza (limestone). The climbing
routes established by generations of rock climbers include classical
routes, routes for artificial climbing and sport climbs. FM offers
a variety of courses on alpine, rock and ice climbing, as well
as personalised instruction and guiding. |
Rila
Rila Mountain is home to the most valued
by Bulgarian rock climbers area – the Maljovitza Valley with granite
walls ranging between 180 and 300m. Especially suitable for summer
(June, July, August and September) and winter (December, January,
February and March) alpinism. Routes range in grades 3 to 8 by
UIAA. Hone your climbing skills on our solid cliffs among picturesque
surroundings.

Vratza
The face climbs right outside
the city of Vratza offer countless possibilities for climbing.
It is up to you whether to climb any one of the existing over
350 routes ranging from grade 3 to 10 by UIAA, or to explore new
routes. The limestone cliffs range from 60 to 400m. They are most
suitable for climbing in April, May, June, September and October.
Apart from these two major climbing sites there are at least 10
smaller ones suitable for summer climbing |

Ice
Climbing
The three major ice climbing areas in Bulgaria
are located in Vitosha, Rila and The Balkan Range. Approach times
vary from a few minutes to the frozen waterfalls of Vitosha in
the outskirts of our capital, to one hour in the Balkan Range.
The multipitch routes are rom 40m to 120m and categories ranging
from III to V.
